About

Tim Shaw is an artist and researcher whose interdisciplinary practice explores sound, light, communication media and the complex relationships between technology, environments and perception. Working across performance, installation and site-responsive interventions, his practice encompasses environmental sound art, digital media, media archaeology, walking practices and experimental forms of listening.

Through the development of bespoke artistic systems and self-made technological instruments, Shaw investigates hidden or overlooked sonic and communicative phenomena. His projects have explored the acoustic worlds of insects, augmented soundwalks, high-voltage performance systems, transmitting images via radio, network latency translated through time-stretched bells and the extraction of musical structures from geological materials.

Shaw’s work has been presented internationally in museums, galleries, festivals and unconventional environments including forests, caves, warehouses and remote landscapes. Collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange are central to his practice, with projects developed alongside researchers and practitioners from fields including musicology, medical science, anthropology, geology, architecture and astrophysics.

He holds a PhD in media art, and his work contributes to ongoing discussions around technology, ecology, listening and the mediation of human experience.

His artworks, recordings and writings have been featured in The Guardian, Arte Tracks, Neural, BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM, We Make Money Not Art, Touch Radio, The British Music Collection, The Field Recording Show, Alphr, Its Nice That, SHAPE and The Space ++ many more.
